Surgery Isn’t the First Option for Knee Pain

Every year, over two million people around the world opt to undergo surgery to heal knee injuries like meniscal tears. Most of them believe that surgery is the only way to achieve lasting relief from pain caused by these injuries. Unbeknownst to many of these patients, however, relatively simple treatments such as physiotherapy can be as effective in healing these injuries as surgery.

Exercise as an Effective Treatment

A research conducted in Norway looked into 140 people, half of them had surgery for degenerative meniscal tears while the other had exercise sessions for three months, followed by daily exercises at home. The study found that the knee-related quality of life for both patient groups were the same.

These results only show that surgery should not always be the first choice when there are other options, like physiotherapy, that yields the same results.

Great Exercises for the Knees

Patients can start with cycling, an excellent exercise that aims to strengthen the quadriceps and hamstring muscles, both of which support the knee joint. Other exercises, like sit to stand, are often recommended for the rehabilitation of the knee.

Though it’s difficult to deal with knee pain, medical experts now agree that surgery is not always the first option when you can turn to a physio expert instead.
